2026-2027 Back-to-School Transportation Information

Parents and guardians can find bus stop info in the PowerSchool Parent Portal (not the mobile app) and should submit a Transportation Request Form only for changes. Bus numbers and times go live in PowerSchool and Edulog on August 17th. Early dismissals will occur the first three weeks as routes are established. No activity bus transportation will be provided during the first week of school. Students should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early, and an authorized adult must be present for students in first grade and below. Starting August 17th, families can track buses live through the Edulog Parent Portal App—sign-up directions are on the transportation webpage:

Virginia SUN Bucks Grocery Benefit Begins Soon for Eligible Children

New Kent County Public Schools is committed to ensuring that all families are aware of Virginia SUN Bucks 2026, a federal program that provides eligible school-age children with a one-time $120 grocery benefit beginning in June 2026. Many students are automatically enrolled based on participation in SNAP, TANF, income-based Medicaid, or the National School Lunch Program, but families who do not meet those criteria may still qualify by applying online, by phone, or by mail before the August 31st deadline. Right at School: A New Childcare Option for NKCPS Families

Beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, Right at School will provide before- and after-school enrichment programming for NKCPS Kindergarten through fifth grade students at all three elementary schools, beginning on the first day of school, August 24th, 2026. Available before school starting at 6:30 a.m. and after school until 6:00 p.m. every day that school is in session, the play-based program features homework time, fitness activities, STEM projects, and leadership development aligned to district standards. Flexible scheduling and drop-in care are available, childcare assistance may be available for eligible families pending state licensure, and Right at School is currently hiring part-time staff for NKCPS locations.

Virginia Department of Education Special Education Parent Survey Now Available

The Virginia Department of Education is requesting all parents of children with disabilities receiving special education services to complete the Annual Special Education Parent Involvement Survey for the 2025-2026 school year.

The survey, available in English and Spanish, will remain open through December 11th, 2026.

Parents should complete one survey for each child currently receiving services, with online submission preferred.

Free Summer Reading Programs

This flyer promotes several free summer reading programs for kids, offering rewards and activities to encourage reading during summer break.

Programs Included

  • Barnes & Noble
    Kids in grades 1–6 can earn a free book by reading and completing a Reading Journal.
  • Chuck E. Cheese
    Children who complete the Reading Rewards Calendar receive 10 free play points.
  • Mensa for Kids
    The Excellence in Reading Program rewards readers with a certificate and an Excellence in Reading T-shirt.
  • Pizza Hut — BOOK IT!
    A reading incentive program designed to encourage kids to read during the school year and summer.
  • bbgb books
    Offers a summer book bingo board where participants can earn prizes. Promotion runs May 15 – August 30, 2026.
  • Heritage Public Library
    Hosting the “Unearth A Story” Summer Reading Program beginning June 29, featuring free events throughout July.

The flyer encourages children to stay engaged in reading over the summer by participating in fun, reward-based literacy programs offered by bookstores, restaurants, libraries, and educational organizations.
