Homecoming Week: Monday, October 26 – Friday, October 30
Students are invited to participate in these daily spirit themes:
- Monday – Character Day: Dress as your favorite character.
- Tuesday – Team Day: Wear a jersey representing your favorite team.
- Wednesday – Backyard Bash: Dress like a “soccer mom” or “BBQ dad.”
- Thursday – Lil’ Ones & Golden Oldies: Dress as a baby or senior citizen.
- Friday – Repping Our Roots: Wear your class color and/or spirit wear.
- Friday – Homecoming: Homecoming Festival from 4:00–6:45 p.m., followed by game kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

The Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC), in partnership with the Virginia Department of Education, is offering Transition University, a free, self-paced online course designed to help parents and guardians of students with disabilities navigate the transition from school services to adult services. Other caregivers and professionals are also welcome, and participants who finish receive a certificate of completion for nine hours of training.
The Fall 2026 session runs October 5th through December 7th, 2026. The course includes five sessions. A new session opens each week beginning October 5th and remains open through December 7th, so participants can work at their own pace.
The Virginia Department of Education is requesting all parents of children with disabilities receiving special education services to complete the Annual Special Education Parent Involvement Survey for the 2025-2026 school year.
The survey, available in English and Spanish, will remain open through December 11th, 2026.
Parents should complete one survey for each child currently receiving services, with online submission preferred.

The flyer reminds families to submit a Free and Reduced Price School Meals application for the 2026–27 school year if they have not already done so.
- Benefits will stop on October 6, 2026 if the school does not have a current application on file.
- Families should complete an application if they want to receive free or reduced-price meals and any other benefits tied to the application.
- Applications can be completed online at www.myschoolapps.com

George W. Watkins Elementary School has been designated as a Project ADAM Heart Safe School, one of only 33 schools in Virginia to earn this distinction, and was featured in the Virginia School Boards Association’s 2025 Showcases for Success Newsletter. This recognition highlights the school’s commitment to cardiac emergency preparedness through rigorous measures such as training a response team, installing AEDs, and conducting annual drills. Led by school nurse Amanda Akrie and supported by Principal Tammy Krejcarek, GWES partnered with the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU to achieve this milestone, ensuring the highest level of safety for students and staff.
