Principal's Message

My name is Russ Macomber and I have been the Principal of George Watkins Elementary for the past sixteen years. I have taught third and fifth grade and have served as an Assistant Elementary Principal in Williamsburg. I am originally from Dartmouth, Massachusetts which is close to Cape Cod. I have lived in Virginia for 31 years but I am still an avid fan of all New England sports. I graduated from Bridgewater State College outside of Boston, and spent many days at Fenway Park and Boston Garden. I completed my Master’s in Administration at the College of William and Mary.

My wife Cindy is from Poland, Ohio and is a third grade teacher in Williamsburg. We have three children, one boy and two girls. Our son is a police officer in Chesapeake, Virginia, our middle daughter is a senior at James Madison University, and our youngest is a junior in high school.  We like to travel, attend sporting events, work in the yard, and take walks in Colonial Williamsburg.

I have a great interest in collecting New England sports memorabilia, playing and listening to music, and playing all kinds of sports. I have seen incredible growth here in New Kent since I started in this position and I look forward to another successful year here at George Watkins Elementary.

We have a wonderful staff here at GWES and we constantly strive to keep students engaged in lessons that meet a variety of learning styles that keep students excited about learning. We offer a variety of activities to keep students involved and enthused and have a wonderful and supportive community that surrounds our school. We hope that you enjoy George Watkins Elementary School, and we will work to make your school experience here in New Kent a positive part of your daily life.

Principal, GWES

Assistant Principal Message

Welcome new and returning Wildcats to the 2020-2021 school year at George Watkins Elementary School! As your Assistant Principal, I am very excited to collaborate with our students and faculty to establish a learning community where each individual can achieve their fullest academic, social, and professional potential. Although I am relatively new to the New Kent community, it is evident our highly dedicated staff and supportive families make George Watkins a great place to learn!

Prior to accepting my position at George Watkins Elementary, I spent the last fourteen years teaching secondary social studies in rural and urban settings in Virginia and Pennsylvania. While working in those schools, I also had the opportunity to serve as Social Studies Department Chair, Performance Based Assessment Developer for several universities and educational entities, and lead technology integrator for the Pennsylvania Department of Education.  During that time, I also decided to continue my education at Villanova University, University of Virginia, and the College of William and Mary in graduate history and school leadership programs.  My experiences in diverse public school settings and higher education have prepared me to contribute and support the rich tradition of excellence at George Watkins Elementary School.

When not at school, I am spending time with my wife, who is also an educator, and son, who will be entering the 3rd grade this year.  We like to spend time in the Virginia outdoors, exploring, and finding new adventures.  I also enjoy lifting weights, playing basketball, and being a fan of everything Philadelphia and Notre Dame football.

I look forward to working with the great students and staff of George Watkins Elementary School this academic year. Education is a collaborative effort, so please do not hesitate to contact me at or 804-966-9660.

Kyle Moser, Assistant Principal, George Watkins Elementary School
